situational IronyThe irony in the story pops up a few times. one of the more noticeable time was when Jim was sailing out to the Hispaniola on his own and trying to play games with the pirates. we first think is it worth the risk of being caught? and as we are reading it we are pretty sure this is not a situation when Jim's luck would pull in his favor. However, when Jim took the ship by control it did surprise us. This is ironic because a child on what is to be compared to a little life raft went up against a huge pirate ship and took control.
Another form of irony i found is based upon trust. when Jim meets Long John Silver he wants to and does trust him. He seems like a good and honest cook that wants nothing to do with and is against piracy when he chased Black dog from his store. once again he seems good when he helps Squire Trelawney select a good, well experienced crew for their journey. When we really get to know who Long John Silver is and what his intentions are for taking all of the treasure for himself and his fellow crew and that he is willing to take over the ship and kill the good men to get what he want we soon realize that they trust him when nobody should trust anything he says he is just pure evil, thats where we see the irony. |

climax The moment of climax is when the pirates’ and Jim’s discovery that the treasure has already been excavated from its burial ground. At this point the suspense has had time to build. Jim adventures back the the fort on the island and is surprised to find the band of sleeping pirates within it. In this we have already learned that Doctor Livesey, Squire Trelawney, and smollett have made a deal with the pirates that in exchange for their lives that they would give them the map with the treasures location. Jim questions why anyone would give into the pirates' demands and the suspense builds when we hear a voice singing above the trees which is believed to be Flint's ghost by all but Silver who believes it is Ben Gunn's ghost. They continue on their journey until they make it to the place that is marked as where the treasure lies and find a huge empty hole. None of them have come to realize that Doctor Livesey had them right when they were wanted. this ultimately came to the falling action and if Doctor didn't set them up they would not have made it out of there to save their lives.

recognitionWhen Jim understands hid situation within the story, it begins when he wakes up from his nap in the apple barrel to Long John Silver's plan to take out the captain and crew. Before this ever happened, Jim thought that him and the crew would go to an island, where they would then find the treasure, and then sail home. Unfortunately, that was but a dream. After discovering that Silver was actually a pirate, and that most of the crew were former members of Flint's crew, Jim realizes that his quest to find the buried treasure won't be as easy as he thought. The pirates planned to kill all the men on board and split the gold between each other.

round characterin treasure island i would say the best example of the round character would have to be Jim, he changes pretty dramatically through the story and we get to watch it through his adventures
Even so, I'm not totally convinced that Jim's experiences have brought him to adulthood yet. You can change and still remain a child if not, childhood would be completely boring and static. Jim's a teenager. so of course he is learning new things. But that doesn't mean that he's reached some well-defined new stage of his life, which is what "coming of age" seems to imply. After all, Jim doesn't exactly spend a lot of time reflecting on the lessons he has learned from his time on Treasure Island. |
